As a buyer, what changes will I see as a result of the merger of paydirekt and giropay?

Nothing is changing for paydirekt and giropay customers – apart from the new brand image and numerous advantages of using a single product: in future, German banks will be bundling their payment methods paydirekt, giropay and Kwitt under the giropay brand in order to provide their customers with all current-account services for an optimum user experience. Our first step here is rebranding as the new giropay.

What specific benefits can I expect from the merger of giropay and paydirekt?

giropay is getting even better, as the new giropay gives you even more options to pay online. You can now pay by online transfer at thousands more shops – until rebranding is complete, just look out for the giropay or paydirekt logo. In addition, you can activate your access to giropay/paydirekt in online banking. This enables you to pay even more conveniently with your username and password. And your purchase is also safeguarded by paydirekt buyer protection. This applies wherever you see the paydirekt logo or the combined giropay/paydirekt logo.

Are there any changes to the giropay service?

No, customers can still count on the usual product promise.

Will I incur any costs if I pay by giropay or paydirekt?

No, both payment methods are free of charge.

 

How do I pay with giropay/paydirekt?

Payment with paydirekt is made using a username and password or via the paydirekt app. It is also possible to pay via the established giropay using your bank’s TAN method. More and more merchants will increasingly be able to offer both payment methods at once from May 2021.

Will my online banking access data be stored by paydirekt?

No, your online banking access data will stay in the secure environment of your bank.

What advantages are there for me if I register for paydirekt?

A paydirekt account has lots of advantages: you can pay easily with your username and password, your payments are secured via paydirekt buyer protection, and you receive a transaction notification each time.

How is payment with the new giropay logo different from payment with the current giropay logo?

Payment via giropay online transfer is possible with both variants. Wherever you see the new giropay logo or the paydirekt logo at the checkout, you can also pay with your paydirekt account.

What is giropay?

giropay is based on online banking using PIN and TAN, and enables payment by online transfer. To pay with giropay, all you need is a current account with access to online banking. You don't have to register with your bank to use giropay.

How does giropay work?

If you choose to pay with giropay in an online shop, you must select the bank where you hold your account. If you wish, we will note which bank you selected, and you won't have to repeat this process next time you make a payment with giropay. In the second step, you log in with your online banking credentials. After logging in successfully you will be shown the pre-filled giropay transfer form that already contains all details of the purchase. To make the payment, all you need to do now is enter a TAN. No TAN is required for amounts up to EUR 30. You are then returned to the online shop. The merchant has now received a payment guarantee and can send the goods to you immediately.

What do i have to do to be able to use giropay as a buyer?

To be able to pay with giropay, you just need an online banking account and the corresponding credentials such as PIN or TAN. No additional registration is required for giropay.

Where can i pay with giropay?

Lots of online shops offer giropay, including Lufthansa, Deutsche Post/DHL and CTS Eventim.

Can customers of all banks pay with giropay?

How secure is payment with giropay?

giropay meets the high security requirements for online banking and always uses AES 256-bit encryption under TLS 1.2 for secure transmission. Make sure that the URL in your browser always starts with “https”, and check the issued certificate. That way, you can proceed safely. Further details can be found in our security information.

What happens to my personal data when i pay with giropay?

giropay is based on online banking. This means that you don't have to register with personal data or create a user profile. You simply use your existing credentials (PIN and TAN). Sensitive and personal data is exchanged between you and your bank only. No third party can view your personal account and transaction information. giropay transfers are therefore covered by data protection and the online banking terms of the respective bank, which can be viewed on the corresponding website of the respective bank.

Are there any costs for using giropay?

As a customer, you can use giropay for free. Please ask your bank whether it charges additional account-management fees for the use of giropay.

What can i do if the merchant says no money has been received?

Your successful giropay transfer is documented in the account statement of your current account. The account statement is regarded as legally binding proof of a successful transfer. If receipt of a payment is disputed, you can show the merchant definite proof of successful transfer in the form of the account statement. You are also welcome to contact our customer service team, who will be happy to help you.

What happens if the merchant fails to deliver despite confirmation of payment?

giropay has high expectations regarding the trustworthiness of connected merchants. If ever you do not receive your goods despite making a successful payment with giropay, please contact the merchant directly as your contract partner. Our customer service team will also be happy to assist you in your communication with the merchant. If you fail to reach agreement with the merchant, you are entitled to take legal action for non-fulfilment of the purchase agreement.

Does giropay offer buyer protection?

No, giropay does not offer buyer protection. In the event of problems with giropay payments, please contact our customer service team.

What tan processes does giropay support?

giropay supports every TAN process offered to you by your bank.

Why wasn't i given the option of tan-free payment even though the amount was below eur 30?

It is up to the account-managing bank to decide whether to offer TAN-free payment. It decides whether and when a TAN should be applied to a giropay payment. This is for your own security and increases protection against misuse.

Does giropay also support the hbci chip card?

At present, giropay can be used with the PIN-TAN method only. Unfortunately, giropay does not yet support the HBCI chip card.

Prove your identity online

What is giropay-id?

With giropay-ID, you can confirm that you are 18 or over (age verification) or ensure that a merchant receives confirmation of your account details (account verification). This is easy, free and requires no extra registration. giropay ID is based on online banking with PIN and TAN. All you need to use it is an online banking account with a participating bank.

How does age verification with giropay-id work?

After choosing your principal bank, you are taken directly from the online shop to the online banking of your participating bank. Here, you log in as usual with your online banking credentials. After logging in successfully, you are shown a message stating that you want to prove to the online shop that you are 18 or over. To perform age verification, all you need to do now is enter a TAN. You will then receive confirmation that age verification was successful. At the same time, the online shop receives confirmation from your bank that you are 18 or over and it can grant you access.

How does account verification with giropay id work?

After choosing your principal bank, you are taken directly from the online shop to the online banking of your participating bank. Here, you log in as usual with your online banking credentials. After logging in successfully, you are shown a message stating that you want to prove your account details to the merchant. To perform account verification, all you need to do now is enter a TAN. Are there any costs for using giropay-id?

Regardless of whether you use giropay-ID for age verification or account verification, there is no cost to you, i.e. your bank charges no extra fees if you use giropay-ID.

What do i have to do to be able to use giropay-id?

To use giropay-ID, you need an online banking account with a bank that participates in giropay-ID. No extra registration or logging in is required.

What personal data is transmitted for age verification with giropay-id?

For age verification with giropay ID, the only details transmitted are your first name, surname and whether you are 18 or over. Your date of birth and other personal data are not passed on to the merchant.

What personal data is transmitted for account verification with giropay-id?

For account verification with giropay-ID, your IBAN and BIC and the name of the account holder are passed on to the merchant. Account balances and account transactions of course remain confidential and are not passed on.

Why is it that can i pay with giropay from my bank now, but can't use giropay-id yet?

The aim is for all banks to offer giropay-ID as well. However, unfortunately there may be some banks that offer giropay, but not giropay-ID.
