giropay – Innovative solutions for e-commerce
THE NEW GIROPAY
From 2021, German banks will be gradually merging their payment methods. Consequently, giropay, paydirekt and Kwitt will become a single brand – the new giropay. Under the umbrella of paydirekt GmbH, the new giropay provides lots of extra advantages for customers, as they now have more payment options in even more online shops:
They can use the giropay method and pay by online transfer with their online banking access data (PIN and TAN), or they can choose the paydirekt method and pay with their username and password, PIN or biometric methods.
With “giropay Geld-Senden”, based on the established Kwitt, customers can additionally send money to family or friends, or request it from them, in just a few clicks.
By bundling the payment methods under a single brand, the banks are strengthening their current account-based digital payment services, gearing payment even more towards current accounts.
Borderless payment with giropay
E-commerce knows no boundaries. That is why giropay enters into collaborations with other national online transfer methods at European level. This allows cross-border payments. In 2014, giropay and Austria-based eps Online-Überweisung implemented the interoperability of the two payment systems so that online shops can use both methods via a single interface. Together, the two systems have a potential user base of over 50 million.

giropay is committed to maximum security
Maximum security is embedded in giropay's DNA. All online transfers and age or account verifications are performed via the secure online banking facility of the respective bank. This guarantees that sensitive data (PIN/TAN) is exchanged between the customer and the bank only. No third party can view personal account and transaction information. Growing numbers of banks also offer customers TAN-free payment. TAN entry can be waived for amounts up to EUR 30. This simplifies and speeds up the payment process without compromising on security.
